Aloysia citrodora (Lemon Verbena) is the name of an aromatic medicinal plant that has a pleasant lemon scent. The leaves of the Aloysia citrodora are rough at the time of contact, and if rubbed, it gives off a pleasant aroma like the smell of lemon. This plant is native to South America and its natural growth has been reported in Argentina, Chile and Peru, and from there it has gone to other parts of the world, including Iran, and is cultivated. In Iran, this plant is cultivated in northern provinces and gardens.
Aloysia citrodora was brought to Europe in the 17th century by the Italian scientist Augustin Lippi and the plant was named after him (scientific name of Aloysia citrodora is Lippia triphylla).
The leaves are the medicinal part of this plant and smell like lemon. The leaves are collected in late summer. Aloysia citrodora leaf powder is matte green in color and has a fragrant smell, its taste is spicy and slightly bitter. Aloysia citrodora is used to treat seizures, indigestion, bloating, unilateral headaches, nerve pain, dizziness and cold symptoms. In addition, it is useful in strengthening memory and creating relaxation and treating insomnia. It is also used as a spice in home use. Aloysia citrodora essential oil has bactericidal and insecticidal properties and is also used in the perfume industry.
